Living in Baja California Sur reminds me of Quebec in years past - perhaps a variation on the times of the two solitudes. The English-speakers of BCS mostly ignore the world of the Spanish-speakers unless they are buying something or need some work done. It is as if there were a one-way mirror and the Anglophones mostly see themselves. On the other side of the mirror the Hispanophones see everything. They do the jobs and sell the goods that make retirement or vacation holidays possible. This social situation seems to work, but..... the "comma buts" are what interest me.
From Santa Rosalia south to Loreto, La Paz, and San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas, this land of desert beaches and mountains attracts people fleeing cold winters. It attracts people seeking jobs. Growth has transformed Los Cabos from the land of Jimmy Buffet into a place for Warren Buffet. The trailer parks are going or gone, and US$300,000 golf memberships are snapped up. There are US$10,000,000 homes under construction, but in the washes new arrivals build shacks knowing that in the next storm season they will lose everything.
Got to go.
